SPANISH NIGHT AT THE NATIONAL AUDITORIUM

Sala Sinfónica

Friday, 24/05/2024 19:30

The last door of the cycle allows us to explore the variety and richness of Spanish music through its symphonic landscapes. On 24 May 2024 we propose a musical journey through the Spanish symphonic music of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a period of great creativity and originality, in which composers were very directly inspired by the music of popular tradition, in a more or less idealised way.

In this concert you will hear pieces that reflect the cultural and geographical diversity of Spain, from the mountains and valleys of the north, through the coasts and islands of the Mediterranean, to the plains and cities of the south. Falla, Turina, Albéniz, Granados... pieces inspired by the popular music, folklore, history and art of each region, creating a musical language of their own, based on Spanish musical tradition and the European trends of their time. Pieces that will make you feel the beauty and character of each landscape, with its rhythms, melodies, colours and emotions, by Gustavo Sánchez, professor at our university and director of Occurrens Sonus, an original programme with which the orchestra triumphed last season in the symphonic hall.

Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in the symphonic landscapes of Spanish music, a genre that reached its maximum splendour and international projection thanks to the masters who cultivated it and which still retains its freshness and beauty today.

THE ART OF THE STAGE IN THE GOLDEN CENTURY

An encounter with Juan del Encina

Sala de Cámara

Saturday, 21/10/2023 19:30

Our first door to the past opens to discover the life and music of one of the greatest poets and composers of the Spanish Renaissance: Juan de la Encina. A concert with the works that would be performed in the entourage of the II Duke of Alba, including the famous "ensaladas musicales" of the 16th century, in a performed version.

In this concert you will be able to enjoy a selection of works by Juan de la Encina, the father of Spanish theatre and one of the masters of religious and secular polyphony, as well as by Mateo Flecha, an author whose fame soon transcended our borders. Juan de la Encina was a multifaceted man who lived during the time of the Catholic Monarchs and travelled to various European courts, where he served as a musician and singer. His compositions reflect his lyrical talent, his humorous wit and his travelling spirit.

This first stage production will be staged, like the music in the galleys of Philip II in the previous season: an actor/singer will portray Juan de la Encina himself, who will tell his story and his experiences at the Court of the Duke of Alba, where he premiered his first theatrical eclogues. He will be accompanied by a select group of singers, as was customary in this setting, and the versatile plucked string.

"Ensaladas musicales" are compositions that mix different languages, styles and genres, creating an amusing and surprising effect. In this concert you will hear some of the most famous ensaladas by another of the great composers of the time: Mateo Flecha the Elder. Mateo Flecha was a pioneer in this type of work, which was not only sung, but also to be performed.

Come closer to the world of Juan de la Encina and discover a musical context full of beauty, grace and emotion.

What secrets do nineteenth-century pianos hold? What stories can their sounds tell us? How was the music of previous centuries played in the past? These are some of the questions posed by this concert, in which two pianos, one from the beginning and the other from the end of that century, will be the protagonists, together with Silvia Márquez.

The keyboard player will introduce us to a repertoire that is often unknown or underrated, playing classical works by Bach, Haendel or Scarlatti as they were understood in the following century. We thus propose a very different approach to the idea of "early music": the one that existed in the 19th century, by checking how these composers sounded on the pianos of that time, and how early music was understood and valued then. It is not only about rare instruments or works, but also a hermeneutic experience, with which to approach the idea of early music in the 19th century.

The repertoire to be performed in this concert is made up of works from the 18th and early 19th centuries, which were part of the usual repertoire. Among them are pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach, the great master of the German Baroque, whose music was admired and studied by all later composers; Georg Friedrich Haendel, the brilliant creator of operas and oratorios who triumphed in England, or Domenico Scarlatti, the innovative author of more than 500 harpsichord sonatas who fused the Italian and Spanish styles. These works will allow us to appreciate the peculiar sonority of 19th century pianos, and how the idea of the concert has evolved today, and the concept of these same works.

Can you imagine what it would be like to attend a public concert in 18th century Madrid? What music was played, who performed it and what the musical atmosphere of the time was like? The Gran Soirée Orquestal will take you back in time with a unique and unrepeatable show.

In this concert you will be able to enjoy a varied and select repertoire, exactly as it was advertised in the Madrid press at the end of the 18th century, reflecting the tastes and musical practices of our fellow citizens of yesteryear. Works by Spanish and foreign composers such as Luigi Boccherini, Joseph Haydn and Luis Misón will be performed in the Symphonic Hall of the National Auditorium of Music, recreating one of the most popular and prestigious cultural events of the time: the public concert.

The public concert was a musical spectacle that depended on no other reason for gathering than the pleasure of listening to music, that sought to attract and entertain the public, and that was open to all kinds of audiences. In Madrid they began to be held in the reign of Carlos III, in the city's theatres, and usually lasted about two hours. The programme consisted of various musical pieces, which could be symphonies, concertos, arias, duets or trios, among other forms. The performers were professional musicians, both instrumentalists and singers, but often amateurs also performed.

To recreate this historical atmosphere, the concert will feature the participation of Os Músicos do Tejo, a group specialising in the performance of early music, directed by Marcos Magalhães, with the collaboration of various soloists, both vocal and instrumental, who will bring the works to life with their talent and expressiveness.

Don't miss this unique opportunity to enjoy music as the 18th century audience did.

On 2 March 2024, the Auditorio Nacional de Música will host the premiere in modern times of the zarzuela Veneno es de amor la envidia, by the Spanish composer Sebastián Durón. It is a work based on Greek mythology, with such mythical characters as Apollo, Circe and Scylla.

This zarzuela, first performed around 1705, is one of Sebastián Durón's most beautiful works, and some of its arias are well known and have been recorded on several occasions. Its music combines arias, duets, choruses and dances, with a sparse instrumentation that includes violins and continuo. Its libretto, written by Antonio de Zamora, is a masterpiece of dramatic literature, mixing tragedy, comedy and fantasy.

Enjoy this jewel of Spain's musical heritage, performed by a first-class cast under the direction of an expert in early music. Veneno es de amor... is a zarzuela that will captivate you with its beauty, emotion and magic.

Jazz is a music that originated in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the result of a fusion of African and European elements. It arrived in Europe during the First World War, when American military bands spread its rhythms and melodies throughout the continent. In Spain, jazz was introduced through the fox-trot, a dance of North American origin that became popular in dance halls and which incorporated elements of ragtime, rumba-habanera, charleston and other African-American music.

In the 1930s, jazz enjoyed a period of splendour in Spain, especially in Madrid and Barcelona, where some of the best international orchestras of the time performed, such as those of Sam Wooding, Jack Hilton and Harry Flemming. The first jazz clubs also sprang up, such as the Club Parisiana in Madrid and the Gran Café Catalán in Barcelona, where aficionados and record collectors gathered. In addition, the first Spanish musicians dedicated to jazz appeared, such as the cupletista Mercedes Serós and the Demon's Jazz orchestra, led by Llorenç Torres Nin.

If you want to relive this golden age of jazz in Spain, we are opening the door to a unique concert that will take you back to the 1930s with a selection of original songs and adaptations of classics of the genre. Enjoy the sound of a typical orchestral band of the period, made up of piano, violin, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, double bass and drums.

Come and discover an unusual and practically unknown repertoire from our recent history.
